Home Brew And Tech Forum / crossband linear ssb transponder project
« on: July 24, 2008, 10:09:52 AM »
I am looking for any information on linear ssb transponders.
The types that are used on the "Oscar" satellites.
I prefer a analog type. Not computer driven.

This is for educational purpose. To learn how they work.
What we are looking into doing is building a transponder that receives UHF ssb and transmits VHF ssb. 50 to 100 khz wide.

After this is built we have a guy that will fly it over several counties in his hot air balloon.

I have already started to experiment with a single channel transponder.

If anyone hears of or see\'s articles of interest please post.

Ham Radio Chit Chat / Any one read this mess?

Dont get me wrong. I do not care for the sale of freebanders radio\'s but wow is all I can say about this. Man there are really some opinions on that topic.

Why do you see so much of the freeband radios now? Because the free banders are using Yaesu\'s, Icoms, and Kenwoods now. Thats right, they are upgrading from the junk.

And how many times have you walked by a private vehicle, that is owned by a firefighter, and see a ham radio mounted to the dash board??? :sadnana:

And the HR2510 and 2600 were decent radios. But added to the Fcc list and now we can not buy them. :th_Smile-KnockKnock

But the Fcc makes the rules and we have to follow them. So I can live with that....

Antennas and Towers / Hygain TH6DXX triband monster
« on: June 30, 2008, 03:24:53 PM »
Last week I revieved a tribander HY beam. Free of charge.
All the parts were there and even had a bag of new hardware with it.

I got it together and put it on top of the shack for now. It is on a tripod. No rotator yet. But will say even as low as it is this antenna is a great performor.

Cant wait to get it up higher.

STEVEN E RAWLS of Williamston NC peacefully passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2008, at Martin General Hospital.

Steve was the trustee of 6 repeaters through out the east coast of NC.
2 of these are 6 meters and other include both VHF/UHF.
Steve also was a Radio Engineer II for the North Carolina Highway Patrol Troop A. He was dedicated in the service of amateur radio and was always willing to lend a hand when needed.

I have spent many hours chatting with Steve over the years and have purchased several peices of ham gear from him.

He will be missed.

Antennas and Towers / Homebrew mobile antenna for HF
« on: June 12, 2008, 09:44:14 PM »
Well, I am now mobile on HF. Thanks to an article I read Here:
http://www.arrl.org/tis/info/pdf/0004033.pdf

The antenna is built like the one mentioned in the article. But this one covers 40 and 80 meters also. I made a few alterations :)

My first contact tonight was a guy in Geogia KC5SCK.
He gave me a good 58 report.

Sorry for the pics but they were took tonight with IR.

The top coil is 31 turns.
The bottom coil is 25 turns.
Spaced 1/8th of an inch apart.

Open Chat / Oil, interesting....

WHERE TO BUY AMERICAN GASOLINE. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW.  READ ON.

Gas rationing in the 70\'s worked even though we grumbled about it.  It might even have been good for us!

Are you aware that the Saudis are boycotting American products?

Shouldn\'t we return the favor?  Can\'t we take control of our own destiny and let these giant oil importers know who REALLY generates their profits, their livings?  How about leaving American Dollars in America and reduce the import/export deficit?

An appealing remedy might be to boycott their GAS.  Every time you fill up your car you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia .  Just purchase gas from companies that don\'t import their oil from the Saudis.

Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill up my tank, I\'m sending my money to people who I get the impression want me, my family and my friends dead.   Don\'t you think it might be of interest to know which oil companies import Middle Eastern oil and which do not?

These companies import Middle Eastern oil:

Shell...................................      205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco...................       144,332,000 barrels
Exxon /Mobil.......................       130,082,000 barrels
Marathon/Speedway............       117,740,000 barrels
Amoco................................       62,231,000 barrels

And CITGO oil is imported from Venezuela by Dictator Hugo Chavez who hates America and openly avows our economic destruction!  (We pay Chavez\'s regime nearly $10 Billion per year in oil revenues!)

The U.S. currently imports 5,517,000 barrels of crude oil per day from OPEC.  If you do the math at $95 per barrel, that\'s over $524 million PER DAY ($191 BILLION per year!) handed over to OPEC, many of whose members are our confirmed enemies!!!!!

Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:
Sunoco........................       0 barrels
Conoco........................       0 barrels
Sinclair.......................       0 barrels
BP / Phillips................        0 barrels
Hess. ........................       0 barrels
ARC0.......................        0 barrels
Maverick......................     0 barrels
Flying J. .....................      0 barrels
Valero..........................     0 barrels
·        I AM GOING TO ADD THE FOLLOWING… J

Murphy Oil USA  sold at Wal-Mart is from South Arkansas and owned USA
Not only that they give scholarships to all children in their town who finish high school and are legal US citizens.
All of this information is available from the U.S. Department of Energy and each company is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing.

But to have a real impact, we need to reach literally millions of gas buyers.  With the help of the internet, it\'s really simple to do.  Now, don\'t wimp out at this point....keep reading and I\'ll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

Oscar Satellite talk / Satellite Positioning sytem, another way
« on: June 02, 2008, 12:30:36 PM »
Over the years I have used different ways to move my antennas.
My current set up is using two rotators. One is a radio shack that is used for azimuth and the other is an alliance U100 that is used for elevation. A bracket was made to hold the U100 on top of the radio shack rotor.

But there are problems in the set up.
1-The U100 is easy to get out of alignment.
2-The rotors step gear is too long.

Resolutions I am looking at.
1-Digital inclination meter. These can be obtained at different hardware stores. These are called electronic spirit levels.
Remove the unit from the level.
Remove sensor from unit.
Mount sensor in water tight box and add cable connectors.
Mount sensor box on horizontal mast.
Sounds easy? I am going to try this and see what comes out.

2-By using the U100 the gear makes 1 revolution then sends a signal to the control box. By this time the antenna may have went past the spot you need to be at. You can modify the gear by adding another “finger”.  This way it slows things down.

What I am looking to do is use a C-band dish actuator. These will move your antennas very slow. A simple control box can be constructed. Plus most of these work from 12 to 36 volts.

I will post pictures as my progress moves forward.
Here is a pick of the angle meter I will use in this process.

AO-7 is not a satellite that is used by casual users. Most are passionate about the "old girl" and are frequent users. The following is a list of callsigns of operators who either file reports here or who are reported to be AO-7 operators listed in order of activity.

Makes me feel good to look at that page and see my call on that list.
Not every one uses the AO-7 log book and I do not log every contact my self.

Just knowing that this bird is still active after so many years and getting to chance to operate via it is great.

Home Brew And Tech Forum / CTCSS and older radios on a budget
« on: May 23, 2008, 04:23:04 PM »
How many of you have older model VHF/UHF radios sitting around with no ctcss boards? I have several myself. Most are all mode rigs that I still use for 2 meter ssb. These are useless on repeaters today so we end up buying new rigs.

But how many of you are tight on money? Just don\'t have the extra cash to spend for the latest and greatest thing on the market. Single tone boards are pretty cheap. But if you need more than just one tone you are going to have to spend more money if you want to use those older rigs.

Here is a cheap affective way to solve your problem.
I was a repair tech for a few commercial radio dealers years ago. Anything we junked I save a lot of old parts from them. Many of the units had plug in adjustable tone boards. I save a lot of tone boards from Johnson PPL 6060\'s
These have a variable resistor and a couple of jumpers to achieve the tone you need.

I used an old enclosure from a TV UHF switch. Mounted the tone board, installed a couple of miniature switches and a 5 position 2 pole wafer switch.
I removed the variable resistor from the unit and connected it to the 5 position switch. So position one is variable and the tuning stub sticks out the top of the unit. The other nine positions I installed resistors for the tone I needed. One of the miniature switches selects which pole is used on the 5 position switch. Another miniature switch is used to select the tone range. (removes jumper).

Only three wires are needed for the connection to the radio.
Tone out
Power
Ground
You can connect the tone out to the center of the deviation control. If you do this make sure to install a 100K ohm resistor in line. You can install a jack in the back of the rig to plug the unit in or disconnect and move to another rig.

Total time to build the unit was a little over 3.5 hours.
Total cost was zero. Everything came from the junk box.

Just an idea to throw out to the ones on a budget.
