#31 IFR 1200 problems and fixes.

In this video we take a look inside the IRF 1200 Service monitor.
We will address the low output issue from the T/R jack and have a look at the termination dummy load failure. We then pull the scope/analyzer unit and repair the dirty switches.

Electronic Video Blog / 500 subscribers !
« on: February 20, 2016, 11:17:57 AM »
I know this is no big thing to most folks but this gives me a feeling of success.
Cannot believe I have already hit 500 subscribers on my YouTube channel.
At  the end of December I was just below 200, January and February has been 2 booming months.

I started my channel over a year ago. At first I did not really do a lot on my channel but a few noobie videos (not that all my video's are not noob produced). I then backed away for quite some time. About 4 months ago I got back to them and been trying to at least upload one ever 2 weeks.

Just a few folks I like to say thanks to for the inspiration:

Dave, EEVBlog.  Dave encouraged me from the beginning.
Lazarus, An online  forum member and close friend that gave me a lot of ideas.
Peter, TRXBench. His videos has helped me so much and is a good friend.
Paul, Mr. Carlson's Lab.  Found this guy via Peters channel.  Very positive and confident blogger.
Alan, w2aew. One of the masters of tutorial videos.
Shahriar, The Signal Path. Another master of tear downs and repairs.
Shock, another forum user that thought me a few things about reaching out and video prep.

And I have to say a big thanks to all my subscribers because without you, I could not do this.
Another thanks go out to the random viewers, these folks give me the most views and thumbs downs. This lets me know I need to do better.

I know there are more that would fit that list so if you were not mention still thanks.
I am really getting excited about this now.

30 videos uploaded, many more to come.

#28 Yaesu YO-100 scope monitor troubleshoot and repair

In this video we take a look at the YO-100 scope monitor.
We will only use out senses to locate the problems without the use of test gear.  We will test a capacitor with a cheap tester. Lets have a look at what we find.

This video shows a simple circuit that was shared by N4TMI in 73 magazine (no defunct, and archives freely available online). It shows a simple 2-transistor oscillator that can be used to test the resonant frequency of an unknown coil / inductor when paired with a known capacitor, as well as the resonant frequency of parallel tuned circuits like IF transformers. This is especially handy for folks that work on old radios and need to identify IF transformers, or want to figure out what value of capacitance to use to resonate with an inductor at a chosen frequency. I show a very handy "slide calculator" that can be used to quickly calculate LC resonant circuit values and frequencies. I made a small modification to the values in the circuit because I used a different N-channel JFET than was used in the article. Here is a link to the original article in 73 magazine from November 1990:

And, here is a link to where you can find the handy L/C/F slide calculator:

How to understand Binary Logic fast and easy. It's surprisingly simple! This is how your computer, clocks, frequency counters, volt meters, and so on, use binary code. This is the "ground floor" of how binary works.

#25 Icom IC-745 repair part 1. tear down and  review of problems

In this video we have a look at Icom IC-745vHF transceiver.
Although this is listed as an all mode rig it does not have AM transmit.
On 24 MHz and up we have an intermitted problem on receive and transmit, this is due to crappy plastic trimmer capacitors in the VCO unit. We will also look at ways to replace the internal battery that holds the information in sram. If this battery dies the unit becomes a brick since it looses all of its factory programming for the cpu.
