Equipment Review / Instrustar scope /SA
« on: November 24, 2018, 04:57:41 PM »
It was a fair while back Buddy, you asked me to give a report ,on this pc based box, Well the scope or spectrum analyser makers have nothing to worry about. I tried the scope  disappointing , then I tried the S/A it does put a kind of wave form up on the pc screen and I'll leave it there. One useful thing it did do was, make me get on and build Hans Summers Spectrum Analyser, not a massive band width, mine goes from  a few Hz to  around 146MHz, which actually covers everything I need, and it is a proper S/A..

Hi Buddy, I to am a pateron  on Paul's site and building this, I just bought a CRO, not had one for years, I think  I may actually buy another, they have more character than the DSO's in my humble opinion and I'm enjoying them again.

Hi Buddy a review on the instrustar, not that good , will never replace the real thing, actually your better off using the FFT on the DSO

Electronic Video Blog / Re: #128 Basic RF Repair Series TEST GEAR
« on: July 24, 2017, 03:37:20 PM »
I bought one of these function generators a while back buddy, mines the Feeltech FY3205s 24MHz they seem to be rebadged  by several names , I would like a circuit diagram of one just in case it plays up, when I started, I built all my own test equipment , which taught me lots, and I still use my own test equipment and still build some things such as the scalar vna, and a antenna analyser which is on the bench at the moment nearly finished.
Trouble these days Buddy not many want to go down the old school way such as us, they want the quick and instant fix, we know electronics doesn't work like that, I have a box full of things that didn't work out, though I am getting through them now.Any way I love watching the way you work, see you can teach a old dog some new tricks.

Buddy I' ll let you know after Christmas, as my daughter has bought me one,I've only heard good things about them  from someone in the club I'm a member of, they do have limitations and can't be compared to the proper S/A that sits here.

Hi Buddy, I thought of you today, you mentioned about displays and replacements, ,have you thought of  oled displays, some are seriously expensive , yet others are cheap. I have a knackered display on a multimeter, and thinking of replacing it with a OLED, as apparently they are a direct replacement.
Anyway thought I'd add it to the mix.

Home Brew And Tech Forum / Sinad Meter

I've been looking for a simple sinad meter circuit, as the proper thing is way to expensive, although I've googled it, no luck.
Is there such a circuit, it would be nice to be able to measure sinad on the receivers I build, with out using a pc program.

Electronic connection / Re: isolation transformers
« on: December 12, 2016, 02:10:43 AM »
Hi Frank, Yes I have a very healthy respect for our 240 volts, why in the modern  world it has to be so high is beyond me. It's that fear which has stopped me working on the old tube radio I have, I do use a variac most of the time, however a isolation transformer is a must I feel.

Electronic connection / isolation transformers
« on: December 11, 2016, 02:41:41 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I want to build a isolation transformer unit, here in the UK we have a spine chilling 240v line voltage, so far I haven't found a 1:1 transformer, so could I use 2x 240 to 50v transformers, use one as a step down and one as a step up, any thoughts on this, I  can't really have a go at a tube radio restoration until I've built a isolation transformer unit.
