I dunno about finding other intelligent life.  I\'m kinda happy they haven\'t found us yet.

Remember that "to serve man" was a cookbook.  :eyepop:

This is actually pretty cool (no pun intended).

However, don\'t be alarmed, you require physical access to the machine to retrieve the encrypted data.

That is a beauty.

My friend Arnold, 9y4NG has a similar one, but he uses it mostly for commercial radio work.

Congrats.

I only got them on 40 cw.

I just haven\'t had much time for radio. :(

Software Talk / Linux 101

A bit late to this thread, but still relevant anyway.

At my job we Red Hat Linux, CentOS and Ubuntu.

I would strongly recommend Ubuntu for anyone interested in Linux.

Apart from working right out of the box, it is configured with security in mind.  It encourages you to use the sudo facility for everything and has apt for updates.

If you like the KDE desktop there\'s also kubuntu which you can install.

Short Wave / Shortwave radios
« on: March 22, 2008, 10:30:12 PM »
Changed the oil in my car today and saw another T-O that I have to fix up.  Need to replace some dry capacitors and also dust the radios out.

I also have a RCA Radiola 18 I\'m fixing up, need to figure out how to power the darn thing, it\'s actually powered from DC from the Edison days.  It\'s a TRF set, not superhet.

Strange and Unusual Chat / Coast to coast AM
« on: March 22, 2008, 10:27:00 PM »
I listen to it on XM on my short drive to the bus park and ride.  XM has it delayed a few hours so I get to listen to it on the morning drive.

I liked it a lot better when Art Bell (W6OBB) was the host, but since he has a new filipina bride and a kid he has pretty much disappeared.  The current hosts are fine though.

Some stuff is boring, but some stuff is interesting.  I don\'t really believe in some of that stuff but it\'s interesting to hear.  But sometimes they talk about astronomy and science, and that is where it gets interesting.

So any fans of Coast to Coast AM?

You live in Montclair?  Wow, we need to have an eyeball QSO, OM.  I sometimes am in that area.  In fact my XYL used to take the train from MSU when we lived in Wayne.  We live in Wantage twp now (sussex county, explains my huge signals since we live in the hills) but sometimes still pass thru or go shopping in the area.

Nice to see you here, Dave.

If you\'re going to be at any local \'fests let me know.

Pretty nice.

I would like to hear how it performs.  I have an arrow antenna but never used it.  Waiting for it to get a bit warm to go outside and make some satellite contacts.  :arf2:

Oh really?  That\'s new.

With WWVB it\'s impractical to sync up every 5 minutes.

Besides, it\'s not necessary.

That sucks man but if it\'s any consolation, I don\'t get a bonus from my job.

I get a lot of little perks, but no bonus.

My first "DX" contact was into the Grenada repeater to J39JT.

It was only 2 meters but I was glad I could contact the neighboring island on 2m.
