Electronic connection / yaesu ft7250 error message on transmit
« on: February 20, 2020, 03:10:23 PM »
im looking for any info on a issue I have with my 7250. In November I left my truck at the airport long term parking with the radio ON, I have it hard wired to the battery with a 8 gauge set of wires to a power outlet setup after a heavy duty switch....bad move. 10 days later on return, after getting a jump start, my radio would not transmit . got "error" message on keying up mike. after a reset to factory settings via the book instructions.  not sure best fix? am I stuck with a return to factory to get serviced?

Basic beginner Electronics / EICO 324- BNC for frequency counter
« on: February 05, 2019, 08:18:08 AM »
I have made a new acquisition of a old EICO 324 , kinda had the same thing go wrong as in Buddy's video, were the resistors on that switch burnt up. this seems to be an original looking, by the paper caps and older style geranium diode.   doing some looking found old64goat's video of putting a bnc in for use with frequency counter. I kinda got the impression that the type of capacitor for this was a silver mica ..for the frequency counter output. What is the theory behind the different kinds of uses? for different types of caps? were there is a ceramic disc 1000pf cap kinda doing the same thing for the same potentiometer. is it a voltage issue, or current?

Basic beginner Electronics / adding fuse to tube radios
« on: January 28, 2019, 09:38:57 AM »
in my rebuild of a hallicrafters s120 I would like to add a slow blow fuse to the " hot" side of the main ac line in. what are the factors I need to think about in choosing the correct amp fuse? Should this fuse be the first thing the line in powers up on it's way through the unit.

in my first stage of this attempt to repair a hallicrafters s120 , I found that this on/off volume switch was used to power up straight from line cord. no fuse . I decided to remove and clean contacts and wiper on the inside with some contact cleaner . upon doing this the on /off switch stopped working and let the shaft rotate too far around. then would not return to off ... no click off . opened the switch up to find that the finger inside that goes into the switch was worn bad enough to miss the slot or slip by the slot . I seen a technique to fix plastic with super glue and baking soda . ? was wondering if this just way too  much work ,and be better off trying to find a replacement  . any idea where to find a replacement with the shaft as long with internal switch . shaft looks to be 3"  to 3.25" long this is listed in the part list as a 2 meg ohm 30% 1/8 watt variable, volume control switch with internal switch. ya guess im stuck trying to fix that finger . got some small files to fine tune the repair, might take longer than i hoped to get this radio up and running.

Equipment Review / Hallicrafters S120
« on: September 06, 2018, 08:34:28 AM »
I just found a S120 on craig's list for cheap...25.00$
now I would like to do some up grading. there are a few solid state parts im not familiar with the way they look. I have a few pictures as is just opened the radio up. I know of "bumble bee caps" but im looking for the selenium diode ...there is a black with silver sides that looks like it is the correct place for it to be this but no ID on it ...  there in the pic under the speaker transformer and BBcap , those rectangle resistors ( 3) black with silver ends? power connection there as well . will the 1n4007 diode be the correct replacement? ordered a cap kit from hayseed has the multi cap paper that is on top of board as well, that has not been replaced , by those pink caps...

Other Electronics and repair / heath v-7A vtvm repair
« on: December 02, 2017, 11:56:55 AM »
Just got a "working" V-7a and found a few things inside that may need to be addressed . the bulb that is mounted on the top , the trace has separated almost to the point of the bulb socket coming off. can I use that CW25 epoxy to secure this before it breaks free? in the pic I have put a small sheet of paper to show the depth of the separation . does this cw25 need to be clamped until the cure time is up?

Antennas and Towers / building yagi
« on: January 30, 2017, 12:47:46 PM »
Here it goes ... I have noticed that in my area there is a broadcast signal being rebroadcast by some kind of
" loop"  the broadcast says " lizard test ..1..2..3.. lizard test " this is being sent out over the 27.185 MHz channel 19 every 15 seconds. It is so crystal clear that it has to be a base station . My thought is to build an yagi that I can drive to certain places and triangulate this broadcast. my question is can I use the dimensions for a yagi for the 11 meter band , that has lengths of 120 " s or so , can I cut it down by 1/4? It will give me a more manageable size to move around. I do use a tuner for my antenna projects , not really worried about the swr  I'm not sending, just trying to find the power out of this broadcast. is that kind of repeating illegal? constant all day long blocking most of the frequency every 15 sec.     trucker love it...

Test Equipment / heathkit sb 614
« on: January 12, 2017, 05:53:39 PM »
I have gotten my HV circuit kit to replace caps and resistors on the high voltage circuit , on examination looks like these parts may have been changed at some point. There are two 70 mf caps next to the 3   0.1mfd +-10% 1600vdc cdent caps...these two aluminum caps do look original see pic for the location . The parts book call for these to be 70 mfd  electrolytic... but no idea of the voltage of these two big caps. Id like to change them also.  they are at c128 c124 on the board. on page 25

Test Equipment / Parts for my Heathkit SB 614 station monitor
« on: January 09, 2017, 04:35:17 PM »
I just found a site that has /or will assemble the Heathkit SB-6XX High Voltage Repair Kit This kit of parts contains the typical parts necessary to rebuild your scope's High Voltage and get the brightness and focus working again. The original resistors were of the carbon composition type and these are known for drifting 'high' in value over time. In the kit you will find replacement parts for the two 3500 Volt diodes, the three 1600 Volt high voltage filter capacitors, plus various resistors to replace those in the high voltage circuit around the focus, brightness, and accelerator circuits. These are typically the parts that fail over time with normal operation.

The high voltage capacitors are Cornell Dubilier and the high voltage diodes are Vishay. All of the replacement resistors are quality film type that will not drift over time as did the originals. The kit includes 'easy to follow' instructions for replacing the necessary parts in your particular scope.

they had other kits as well not sure if I can paste a link but ...here it is

wow can't believe that I haven't found this site until now. I have been a radio nut for a long time , Dad had his hr2510 10 meter setup for a long time in the '80's with his passing I ended up with the very radio that got me interested in the "cb" thing back in the day. In the mid 90"s I found myself installing this in my truck with all the stuff he had setup. There is a palomar 250 amp , mobile antenna tuner , swr/power meter , I added a 102 " whip to the mix .  back then to get a ham novice you needed cw to complete the license , and I tried to get that into my head but failed to go all the way. built long line antennas to test for fun and learn more on how to DIY . changed jobs were I lost the extra time to keep this fire going. I moved just a few months ago and found the rig in a box and got my interest up again. well this got me to the point of getting a heathkit sb614 station monitor . My goal is to get that old monitor up and running by rebuilding , refurbishing this old unit. I will need to get all the bits together , I did find a parts list for the unit and need to get some help with the best way to get these bits... caps, resistors and such. I have in the past done some small soldering on boards but not like this project. At the time in the 90's I did use the unit on side band to talk to a station in southern Australia . Well after all this time I think I would like to get the 2510 upgraded with cap/res replaced by someone better than me...ha ha , I might be able to handle that old heathkit but ... I let the radio go to a pro. to refurbish . any  Ideas on best place to start on my sb614 as far as parts?
