Amplifiers / Johnson Viking Thunderbolt
« on: February 12, 2010, 09:51:41 AM »
I think, if i remember from when i looked at a  year or so ago it is just a  6.3 volt filiment transformer wired backward off the  6.3 volt  filament line.

120 ac out.   simple rectifier/ cap  circuit.
very little current drawn..
no real load on the  filament  transformer.

i havent finished yet but the heath has plenty of room to mount  two   dow key  relays i accuired,  under the chasis...

bias supply is also mounted under the chassis..

for the relay power  i have a 12 volt  1 amp   wall wart  to wire in..

only modification to the heath is  replacing the two   rg8 cables under the chasis to the   SO239s with new cable running to the relays.

nothing external or  holes in the cabinet.

no different than other vintage amps.
all you need to put behind modern transciever is a  relay  to switch  the input  to output   SO239s.
so the amp is bypassed on receive..
MY heathkit  needed a bias supply  but someone had already  put that in..

a  2 pole  5 amp contact    12 volt coil relay will do the trick.
many circuits on the internet.

also for   crazy         using an amp  on  CB is illegal  in case you were not
 kidding...

a couple of us  in Sherburn  high school  formed a  radio club.
no one got licensed but we played with radios and electricity  a bit.

I went on to get  2nd  phone by the time i was  21.  joined the army.
got  conditional  there.  went on to  advanced 25 years later.
I have  GROL since \'85
I worked backwards from commercial  to an amateur license.

mcm.com

I have had  "allelectronics" catalogs  butits  been a while.   surplus type stuff.

I am a big fan of   reading  the  ADS  in magazines........
learn a lot there.
I rmemeber as a kid on the farm,  i read the ads in all the farm magazines.

I just finished my  third copy of the  ARRL HANDBOOK  28 volt power supply,
modified to 13.8 volts.
I started with a 44volt 16 amp transformer purched for $5  at a , you got it,
  a farm show flea market..
Using a digital volt meter and a sharp tool I found the exact center of the output winding within a few hundredths of a volt.
I cut the winding with a dremel tool  and added two wires to  parallel the windings , making a 22 volt 32 amp winding.
Built the whole thing in a cabinet from a TV sweep generator.
I used  a different  output transistor  than the 3055s called for.
I used a 30 amp version.
With the sheetmetal work etc, I have abut  40 hours in it.

Get out there and  build.!!!!!!!

I have ictures  but can\'t figure out how to insert them.   right clik image doesnt work

Antennas and Towers / Cheap POS longwire
« on: February 01, 2009, 10:31:24 AM »
any wire is an antenna.  good for you for trying.. and the only shortcoming of  POS  wire is it tends to stretch with time and heat.
you can make a dipole by using any insulator in the center.

cut up  old computer firbeglass cases, throw away printer covers etc.
plastic windows in printers.
buy a sheet of 1/4 inch  plexy  at   ACE or home depot.
or  1/8 inch plexy and  hot glue  two or three  pieces together.

a good trick is to use several \'black\'  zip ties to hold a short piece of
1/8 in  rubber  auto hose to the center insulator and tape  to the  lead  as a strain relief...

other wise the lead will break on one side and  antenna acts funny  and a dipole cant be checked with an ohm meter like a closed loop beam can sometimes.
use pulleys on the ends so you can raise and lower two dozen times  to get it right.

have fun.

Ham Radio Chit Chat / Amateur Radio Repair
« on: February 01, 2009, 10:22:37 AM »
I\'ve been in the repair buisiness for 40 years.
the last 9 or so  It was all "billable \' time.    No maintanance contracts.
warranty  gets to be a problem..  30 days or  30 seconds or untill you hit \'start\'

I would be very careful about charging,  as then there is an  \'implied warranty\'\'  even when the new problem is no way related to the old one.

I\'m a much better technician tyhan most hams around here. and I have much more test equipment,  but I \'get a felling\' about the person and their problem
before i commit to any thing that may come back to hauntme.
I can do the simple things  and also will work on the others stuff
it they sit beside me and follow along and make decisions, especially when it gets to    \'big bore shotgunning \' something.
eventually  you can get to the  SWAG method of troubleshooting.
