Equipment Review / Hallicrafters S120
« on: September 06, 2018, 08:34:28 AM »
I just found a S120 on craig's list for cheap...25.00$
now I would like to do some up grading. there are a few solid state parts im not familiar with the way they look. I have a few pictures as is just opened the radio up. I know of "bumble bee caps" but im looking for the selenium diode ...there is a black with silver sides that looks like it is the correct place for it to be this but no ID on it ...  there in the pic under the speaker transformer and BBcap , those rectangle resistors ( 3) black with silver ends? power connection there as well . will the 1n4007 diode be the correct replacement? ordered a cap kit from hayseed has the multi cap paper that is on top of board as well, that has not been replaced , by those pink caps...

Antennas and Towers / Re: building yagi
« on: May 24, 2018, 06:22:30 PM »
have an update to the post I started ...this loop broadcast was being tested by the Kentucky transportation board here in louisville. there is a new bridge called the Louis and Clark , and there is a tunnel that connects the east end in KY to the west end in IN. the KTB runs the maintenance building, this is were the broadcast  originated  . there is a huge antenna mast that has several different types of antennas leading to the main building.   I did contact the fcc and KTB to see if this was a contractor oversight ? for leaving the broadcast on a continuous loop?    for over a year !   after the email was replied to from the KTB. this broadcast was ended .

seen some body put up an old pace video on same subject was also good for ideas on DIY fixes. Ya Im going into hibernation mode for the winter and need some things to keep me busy. this meter was a 27.00$ find on ebay ,so not bad. looking to change filter cap and the rectifier cap as well . all look original. but I have not powered it up as is yet . just a good cleaning and inspection to this point. came with the build guide as well, seen there was a mod for the grounding...

Just got a "working" V-7a and found a few things inside that may need to be addressed . the bulb that is mounted on the top , the trace has separated almost to the point of the bulb socket coming off. can I use that CW25 epoxy to secure this before it breaks free? in the pic I have put a small sheet of paper to show the depth of the separation . does this cw25 need to be clamped until the cure time is up?

Test Equipment / my heathkit sb 614 and new equipment...
« on: November 16, 2017, 07:56:29 PM »
well Im hooked...after the sb614 station monitor I purchased and recapped I am looking to get some equipment to check and learn how to do a basic Alignment   ...the next addition is a PC USB 2CH 60M 200MS/s Digital Oscilloscope 60M Spectrum analyzer Data Recorder , as well as a DANIU FY3224S (FY3200S-24M) 24MHz Dual-channel Arbitrary Waveform DDS Function Signal Generator Sine Square Wave Sweep Counter, VICTOR VC3165 110V-220V Professional Precision Frequency Counter Meter. also got a cheap cobra 19 plus . to do these tests on. I need to get some kind of an attenuator ? are these a good start? cheap ya...
point me toward some reading material that covers old school  Alignments and tools? Did I go too fast here in my equipment? as far as the 11 meter band will that FY3224S work in this application.  thanks

K7rmj thanks for the advise , I did replace the two high 50mf caps with the 10mf . they were both 16 volt , so no changes to the circuit they where in.. I still would like to get those old green resistors ( 4 ) as well as that square wire wound changed, maybe with a newer type? they seem really long, as far as resistors go, new ones might not be that long even with the leads extended to the though holes? no worries I like working on this unit. I wonder if the work I have done can be tested in a shop that knows the in's and out's of these Heathkit  monitors.

Antennas and Towers / building yagi
« on: January 30, 2017, 12:47:46 PM »
Here it goes ... I have noticed that in my area there is a broadcast signal being rebroadcast by some kind of
" loop"  the broadcast says " lizard test ..1..2..3.. lizard test " this is being sent out over the 27.185 MHz channel 19 every 15 seconds. It is so crystal clear that it has to be a base station . My thought is to build an yagi that I can drive to certain places and triangulate this broadcast. my question is can I use the dimensions for a yagi for the 11 meter band , that has lengths of 120 " s or so , can I cut it down by 1/4? It will give me a more manageable size to move around. I do use a tuner for my antenna projects , not really worried about the swr  I'm not sending, just trying to find the power out of this broadcast. is that kind of repeating illegal? constant all day long blocking most of the frequency every 15 sec.     trucker love it...

Im learning everyday , helps as far as some of the categories that are covered in the test for my ham ticket. I am also replacing all electrolytic caps to new ones , some of the original ones I can not match up exactly , I have read that if the mf rating is not exact than the next closer higher is the rule of thumb. most of the voltages are also close , like 10 mf at 9v turned into new 30 mf at 15 volts.   50mf is a 100mf and the  250mf went to 300mf. how about those (4 )green 10K ohm 7watt round resistors can I upgrade those with new? what would you recommend for replacements ?    (1) 2K ohm 10 watt square wire wound? t I think they are in the pic on this post. I like working on my stuff  " indoors" not like my full time job...
