Silent Keys, Ham to Ham reference, Friends / A dear friend Howard W8NEE SK
« on: September 16, 2008, 09:13:29 PM »
Howard was one of the few people here locally pushing me to keep working on upgrading, and he was the lead of the VE team that administered my exam a few weeks ago.

Last Sunday he went to the Adrian Michigan hamfest, in the morning, and died Sunday afternoon. He was discovered unconcious in his car in the parking lot of Wendy\'s and pronounced dead at the hospital. He worked in electronics for years, and was a heck of a nice guy to talk to and learn from.

Antennas and Towers / Cheap POS longwire
« on: September 06, 2008, 08:43:11 PM »
Having only a 10m antenna up, I decided to do some experimenting for antennas for HF. I didn\'t have any parts to make a typical dipole. What I did have was an old POS 50 ft extention cord with the ends cut off. I stripped the orange jacket off, seperated the 3 conductors, spliced two of them together giving me 100 ft of wire. One end is connected to my tuner which is capable of tuning a random length wire, from there it goes out the window of my second floor shackm and slopes down to the back yard.

At the moment it is only in a temp setup until I have time to work out something better. But I can\'t complain about it\'s performance.

Alert Forum / new phone scam going around
« on: August 15, 2008, 05:43:11 PM »
I\'ve recieved phone calls twice now from someone with a foreign accent claiming to be with the "US Federal Grant Dept" telling me I have been awarded a grant, and they walt all of my personal information.

#1 there is no department named the "US Federal Grant Department"
#2 to be awarded a grant, first you have to apply for it.
#3 with grant awards from the US Government (FEMA/DHS/EMPG/AFG/CEDAP/Pell/etc.), the recipient is notified by mail not by phone.

I work with federal grants on a daily basis, and they all deal with my work, if they would call me, they would call my office number, and then that wwould only be to clarify something on my grant application.

Please be aware of this scam.

Repeaters / Repeater Usage
« on: August 11, 2008, 09:22:05 AM »
I forgot to mention that when I travel, I\'ll look up the local repeater info and program them into my HT and/or mobile rig. It is kinda fun to talk to new hams in other areas, met some really great people in Raleigh NC over the radio last week.
