Contest Vs. Ragchew
« on: February 22, 2008, 04:44:11 PM »
What type of CW operating style do you take into play? Contest, or Ragchew?

I myself enjoy contest style QSO\'s, unless I\'ve QSO\'d with the person before and am simply catching up with them. My QSO\'s (CW and Phone) generally consist of a simple 5NN (or 59), name Cal, QTH MN, 73.

What style of operating do you enjoy?

Well....

For QRQ I am definitely a contest and DX op. I can\'t keep it up for very long, so small bursts work for contests and DX for me.

But I also enjoy QRS CW QSOs.

For QRS QSOs I also enjoy using my J-38 straight key.  I enjoyed SKN this year and I think I\'ll do it next year.

I mostly enjoy ragchews.
There are "sprints", contests that only last a few hours that I have worked, especially the one sponsored by SKCC. A two hour contest I can handle. Not the ones that last all weekend !

I did a couple of SKCC \'sprints\', but usually enjoyed the rag chew that followed. (I am #2171 BTW). I really don\'t get in to contesting at all. I think the numbers competition is great though for those who get into it and am amazed at the vast number of contacts made (sorry, I can\'t bring myself to calling a contest contact a \'QSO\').

Eh, I guess I will always be a rag chewer, but hey, who knows, one of these days I may go for Centurion and Tribune with SKCC. Stranger stuff has happened.

I normally enjoy a few ragchews during the week during the evenings on 40 or 80 meters.

Other than that I\'m a contest person.

I do both actually as I do enjoy rag chewing when I have some time ti kill and am bored. I also enjoy contesting, CW or Phone it doesn\'t matter to me in the least. Right now I have no antennas up because I moved to a new QTH which is much higher in elevation than my previous QTH. My last place was Carteret, NJ (Exit 12 NJ Turnpike) and my antennas were only about 40\' ASL. The new QTH is in Montclair, NJ (FN20vt) and once the antennas installed my VHF/UHF yagi\'s will be roughly going to be at 350\' ASL so that should do a lot for my signal. I am also building a nice wire HF antenna which I can\'t wait to install and a friend of a very good friend  has offered to sell me a descent Yaesu HF amp that put out roughly 700-800 watts. Since it is an older amp I will treat it carefully and not overdrive it.

I\'m looking forward to operating in some contests, especially the CW ones but once I have the antennas up I will make a sked with anyone, phone or cw.

That was a bold remark Dave. :4:

I like it all. Not so much ragchewing lately, hunting countries now, but do like the call CQ or prowl around the contests.

Lately I\'ve been more of a predator, more listening than talking.
